Tauterryggen

Tauterryggen is a shallow underwater ridge stretching across the Trondheimsfjord in central Norway, roughly midway between Leksvik and Frosta. The ridge is a geologically significant end moraine, deposited by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age, and represents one of the few places in the world where deep-sea coral communities thrive at extremely shallow depths. The site was designated as one of Norway's first marine protected areas in June 2013, alongside Framvaren and Saltstraumen, marking a landmark moment in Nordic ocean conservation. Within protected marine areas such as Tauterryggen, trawling and oil drilling are prohibited, allowing the seabed and its associated ecosystems to remain undisturbed. Tauterryggen is internationally recognized for hosting the shallowest known cold-water coral occurrence in the world, a feature that has made it an important reference site for marine research and coral ecology. The site illustrates how glacial processes and deep-water biology intersect in Norwegian fjords, creating habitats that are both scientifically valuable and ecologically sensitive.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
