Deosai National Park

Deosai National Park is a high-altitude alpine wilderness area located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, situated between the Skardu District and Astore District. The park encompasses the Deosai Plains, a vast rolling plateau averaging 4,114 metres above sea level, making it the second highest plateau in the world after the Changtang Tibetan Plateau. The landscape is characterized by expansive alpine meadows, undulating terrain, and a network of rivers including the Bara Pani, the largest watercourse traversing the park. The area lies to the east of Nanga Parbat in the western Himalayas, close to the central Karakoram Range, and is surrounded by the Deosai Mountains. The park was established in 1993 primarily to protect the critically endangered Himalayan brown bear and represents one of the most significant wilderness areas in Pakistan, recognized under IUCN Category Ib as a protected wilderness area.
