Hokersar

Hokersar is a wetland conservation area in the Kashmir Valley, northwestern India, situated about 10 kilometres from Srinagar in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Lying at roughly 1,584 metres in the Jhelum River basin, it functions as the largest bird reserve within the valley and as a critical staging ground for migratory waterbirds moving along the Central Asian Flyway. The wetland combines open water, marsh, and silted pasture zones, supporting dense stands of macrophytes, floating species such as water chestnut, and extensive reed beds. Since 2005 it has been listed under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance, and it is recognized as an Important Bird Area within India's National Wetlands Conservation Programme. Hokersar's significance lies in its ecological role more than its physical size. Each winter it hosts very large concentrations of ducks, geese, cranes, and shorebirds that breed in Siberia and Central Asia, making the Kashmir Valley one of South Asia's most important inland sites for Palearctic waterfowl.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
