Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary

Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in the southeastern corner of Tamil Nadu, India, occupying a low-lying coastal island at the tip of Nagapattinam District where the Palk Strait meets the Bay of Bengal. Established in 1967 primarily to conserve the blackbuck, the sanctuary has grown into one of the most important coastal wildlife sites in South India, combining sand dunes, tidal mudflats, salt swamps, mangroves, and fragments of tropical dry evergreen forest in a compact setting. The sanctuary forms the easternmost anchor of the Great Vedaranyam Swamp, and together with surrounding wetlands it was declared a Ramsar Site in 2002. It is internationally recognized for hosting the second largest congregation of migratory waterbirds in India, with peak counts exceeding 100,000 birds from places as far away as Siberia and Central Asia. Greater flamingos are among the most visible seasonal visitors, and the sanctuary also shelters chital, wild boar, feral horses, monitor lizards, and threatened marine species. Beyond its ecological role, Point Calimere carries a long human history. Ancient Chola-era lighthouse ruins, a shrine marking the legendary footprint of Lord Rama on the district's highest dune, and several active village temples place the sanctuary at the intersection of coastal Tamil heritage and living religious practice. The site's combination of wildlife significance, wetland importance, and cultural landmarks makes it a distinctive node within India's network of protected natural areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
