Astore Wildlife Sanctuary

Astore Wildlife Sanctuary is a large protected wildlife refuge in Gilgit-Baltistan, in the far north of Pakistan. It lies within the Astore District, set between the western flank of the Nanga Parbat massif and the high grasslands of the Deosai plains to the east, and roughly eleven kilometers from the town of Bungi along the Indus valley. The sanctuary spans an impressive vertical range, from the warm valley floor near the Indus River up into the snowfields and alpine ridges of the surrounding mountains. The reserve was formally designated in 1975 and covers about 414 square kilometers of rugged mountain terrain. Because it stretches from arid valley bottoms into the high alpine zone, it supports a mix of dry temperate forest, juniper slopes, scrubland, and open alpine pasture that has long been considered important habitat for wild ungulates and the large carnivores that depend on them. Astore Wildlife Sanctuary is most notable for protecting a small population of the Astor markhor, a near-threatened wild goat that is the national animal of Pakistan. Beyond this flagship species, the sanctuary provides a refuge for snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, and Eurasian lynx, making it a key component of the broader wildlife conservation network of the western Karakoram and the Nanga Parbat region.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
